Rare one of a kind original California 1940 teardrop trailerHas been beautifully restored!
Teardrop trailers evolved in the 1930’s and became extremely popular in the 1940’s after World War II.The teardrop trailer was light weight and could easily be pulled behind the family car in the 1930’s and 1940’s.Most Teardrop trailers were constructed with materials obtained from World War II surplus markets. The exterior skins were usually made from the aluminum wings of World War II bombers which gave the Teardrop trailers their shiny exteriors. The trailer seen here was definitely constructed using aircraft aluminum. There are many key features on this teardrop that show markings used on airplanes. The rear hatch in the back where the kitchen area/storage area has many rivets with original window cut out. Both doors for getting into the interior of the teardrop are also constructed in a similar way with many rivets. I noticed the teardrop body is made with aluminum aircraft frame and aircraft aluminum skin. The frame that it sits on is steel with a 1936 Ford axle and wheels. This is an original 1940 California home built teardrop. I found some of the original registration from 1950s to 1970s all saying homebuilt year built 1940. I have also found when looking underneath a stamped name tag which is unusual? I tried looking up the name online and all I found was a world war 1 airplane pilot? I still have the name tag and have reattached it inside the cab of the trailer. This trailer has been meticulously restored by trying to keep the key features. This is a very functional teardrop camper that can be towed wherever you want to go it sits off the ground just a little bit higher than your average teardrop. This Teardrop is very light weight I would say it weighs between 500 to 800 pounds? Can be easily pushed around by one person. All I can say is whoever built this teardrop trailer knew what they were doing because it’s built so well. Everything has been redone on this trailer to make it functional and safe. All of the electrical is brand new and tires are new as well. This is a true historical teardrop trailer that you won’t find anywhere else!
The last set of pictures are what it looked like before restoration.
The very last photo is showing original registration papers that I found.
