Description
This is a rare virtually never seen 1943 All Star War Bond Souvenir Yearbook like Souvenir Program. The game was held at the Polo Grounds to Buy War Bonds for WW 2. The box seats along the field actually cost a million dollars. The admission to the game was to actually purchase some War Bonds! The War Bond Team was made up of Stars from the 3 New York Teams - Yankees, Giants and Dodgers. They played The Camp Cumberland Team which was mostly comprised of Major Leaguers who were in the service to include Hank Greenberg. Before the game 7 of the 12 living Hall of Famers took the field in there original uniforms and baseball positions. Among them of course was Walter "The Big Train" Johnson and Babe Ruth. The BABE came to the plate to the cheers of the crowd and actually hit one out of The Polo Grounds (260 foot) in what was actually his last Home Run in a Major League Park. The Program has a neat section covering all of The Hall of Famer's 1st actual baseball game - who would have thought of that? So this game raised a lot of money for the War Effort and has a lot of baseball history to add to. For more on the game and some photos the late editor of Sports Collectors Digest wrote a story about it and you can find it on the internet. Program is complete with moderate wear - good to very good condition. A rare program with lots of meaning and baseball history. See the 8 scans. From my personal baseball collection.
